Posters are a great way to spread your message to a wide audience. However, not all posters attract the interest of the viewer. Thus it is vital to have a poster that stands out and draws the attention of your viewers. Creating an effective poster requires a variety of factors. A few of these tips are listed below.
1. Keep It to the Point.
When creating a poster you should use your words sparingly. The poster is to grab the interest of the viewer. Therefore, it should highlight important details, not tell the entire story. Avoid using long paragraphs instead use bullet points to help simplify the message.
2. Think about the Location.
The location of the completed poster is significant in the overall concept or design. It lets you know how detailed the poster should be, the size you should make it, and more.
3. Make Sure to Leave Space.
White space, also known as negative space, is an important aspect of creating an effective poster. Using white space, you can create a way to draw attention to specific elements. Make sure you design doesn’t appear to busy, simple is better. Symmetry is your friend. You want your poster design to be balanced and not create overcrowded sections of the page. Overcrowding in one area creates a “heavy” look to that section of the page.
4. Use the Right Imagery.
There are two things that you should remember when choosing images for your poster. The first is to always choose imagery that is relevant to the purpose of the poster. The second thing to remember is that the image is to attract attention to the poster. Images are a great way to increase both the understanding and interest a user interprets from the poster. Always make sure to avoid using images that are hard to make out. This can be due to low resolution, blurring, too dark of an image, etc.
5. Font Can Make or Break a Poster.
First rule of using font on a poster is to avoid using too many fonts in the same design. This can be distracting as well as create a cluttered overall look. As a general rule, it is best to use one to two different fonts per poster. Make sure your text has readability both up close and from a distance. When creating your design, make sure you poster is legible from 5 feet away.
Creating a good poster is more than just slapping a picture and some text on a page. From using the right imagery to remembering to leave space, there are plenty of tips and techniques out there to help you create an effective poster for your business. Remember any poster your company uses is also a reflection on your business. Therefore, like all of your printed marketing materials, it should always look professional.
