5 Considerations When Designing Notepads

There are a wide variety of options when it comes to notepads. You can change their colours, add images, or even make them specific sizes. The possibilities are endless. However, it is important to keep a few considerations in mind when designing your next notepad.

What Type of Layout Do You Want?

The layout of your design is based on the purpose for your notepad. A common option you can choose is to have your business logo and contact information at the top of the page, while leaving the rest of the page blank for use. Not only is what the notepad is for important, but who it is for. Common business related notepad themes include: “To-Do Lists”, “From the Desk of…”, or “While You Were Out”.

What Materials Will You Use?

It is important to remember that materials can and will affect the way the finished product looks. Think about a photograph. You generally have two options when you get the picture developed, “gloss” and “matt”. Although the picture is still of the same image, it appears slightly different due to the coating used on the paper. Different paper types also have different weights.

Will You Use Colour?

Colour is a great way to make your design stand out. Notepads are no longer just black and white. They can use corporate hues or vivid colours to help give your notepad originality. Generally, it is best to use a white or light coloured paper for the design. Darker colours tend to lower the usability factor. Remember to compliment your design, not overwhelm it with the colours you choose.

What Size Will You Make It?

Notepads can come in a wide variety of sizes. However, few think of just how important this decision is. Think about it. If the notepad is too large or bulky, the user may not keep the notepad handy. To make sure the notepad fits the wants and needs for your business, think about how you intend to use it. This can also help to determine the number of sheets you want per pad. For instance, if you tend to take a good amount of notes, you may want to have a larger number of sheets for each notepad.

Is the Notepad Useful?

One of the biggest things to remember when creating your notepad is that the notepads are a tool. Often times this can be forgotten in the designing process. Notepads can be created to look more like artwork and tend to lack usability. The entire purpose is to be used for writing down notes, sketching, etc. Keep the design simple. You can easily create a stand out design without cutting into the usefulness of the product.

No matter what industry you work in, notepads are an everyday item. By using notepads in your printed marketing efforts, you can help keep your business in the eyes of your clients, employees, and business associates. Notepads generally have a vast amount of white space. However, the design process can include some challenges, so it is important to remember these considerations when you are ready to start your design.
